chapter 2 : revelation
Int. Headquarters - Night
Gavin lands inside the Headquarters Hangar and Wesley climbs off of his back, his stomach churning from the flight. Moving quickly, Gavin heads toward the entrance to the Underground Base with Wesley trailing behind him. As Gavin enters the code and the door opens, Wesley catches up to him, his breathing ragged as he tries to keep up.
Wesley
Can you slow down?
Gavin
My bad. I'm used to you walking quicker than that.
Wesley
Yeah well flying on your back isn't exactly first class.
Gavin
Sorry, but I didn't get authorization before leaving the base. So I couldn't take a ship, and either way, I'm faster on my own.
The door closes behind them as they enter S.T.A.T.I.C Headquarters, the sound of the heavy metal door echoing through the cavernous room.
Gavin
Aren't your friends going to be worried about the full-on police investigation going on at your loft?
Wesley
Sam has already left for New York, and Angie doesn’t know where the loft is. Besides, I don't exist in any database, so the police couldn't find me if they tried. You only found me because I told you where I was going.
Gavin
Wait so they don't know about-
Gavin stops suddenly and strikes a dramatic pose, his arms extended as if he's firing a concussive blast. Wesley can't help but laugh at the sight, his laughter echoing through the empty hall.
Wesley
Thank you for that demonstration. But, no they don't know about my powers or what I am.
Gavin
How come?
Wesley
Because I don't see that ending well. Remember what happened the last time? Everyone treated me differently and two of my friends ended up dead.
Gavin
Right.
Wesley
Exactly. I'd rather not relive that.
Gavin
Ok let's talk about something else. How are you handling everything?
Wesley
What do you mean?
Gavin
Well I kind of sprung a lot on you in the past 22 hours and almost got you killed.
Wesley
I'm fine. I’ve been through worse.
Gavin
You also didn't go through some of that alone.
Wesley
We're not calling them.
Gavin
Fine.
As they're walking through the base, a young woman walks out of a living quarters room. Wesley and Gavin come face-to-face with the young woman.
The young woman is dressed in a stylish beige rib-knit sweater vest that adds a touch of warmth to her ensemble. Her attire is further complemented by well-fitted black pin-striped dress pants that exude professionalism. Completing the look are a pair of sleek black flats that offer both comfort and a polished appearance.
Gavin
Hey Valeria. Where's Ajax?
Valeria immediately looks down at her tablet, avoiding eye contact with Gavin. Wesley realizes what's going on and glances at Gavin, who seems oblivious to the situation.
Valeria
Hey Gavin. He’s in his office and he’s looking for you. He had that look on his face.
Gavin
What look?
Wesley
The look he gives when you disobey a direct order.
Valeria hears the voice and looks at Wesley, her expression curious.
Valeria
Wait aren't you-?
Wesley
Yeah, I'm Ajax's son. My name is Wesley Johnson. It's nice to meet you.
Wesley extends his hand, and Valeria firmly grasps it, their hands meeting in a brief yet meaningful handshake.
Valeria
I thought I recognized you. Your dad has a bunch of pictures of you on his desk.
Wesley smiles.
Wesley
Of course he does.
Mid-conversation, Gavin's grip on Wesley's arm tightens, causing him to turn his attention in the direction Gavin is looking. His eyes follow Gavin's line of sight, landing on a young man as he emerges from his quarters.
Gavin
Alright, come on. We have to talk to your dad. See you later, Valeria.
Valeria
Oh ok. Bye guys.
Gavin's firm grasp guides Wesley away, leading him into the lounge area. Meanwhile, the young man approaches Valeria.
Young Man
Was that who thought it was with Gavin?
Valeria's eyes widen in unexpected surprise as she turns on her heel, finding the young man standing right behind her. Her initial shock gives way to a warm smile.
Keith's attire showcases a relaxed yet comfortable style. He's dressed in a navy blue sweatshirt that provides a casual and cozy vibe. Accompanying the sweatshirt, he wears a pair of grey sweatpants, offering a laid-back aesthetic. The outfit is completed with classic white sneakers that add a touch of simplicity and versatility to his look.
Valeria
Oh! Hi Keith. Yeah, that's him. How's Jade?
Keith
That's what I came to ask you. Could you check her again? Her fever still hasn't gone down.
Valeria
Sure! No problem.
Keith and Valeria head toward his living quarters.
Int. Headquarters Lounge - Night
Gavin pulls Wesley into the lounge, heading towards the staircase leading to Ajax's office. Wesley pulls his arm away, confused.
Wesley
Are you done?
Gavin
Sorry.
Wesley
What the hell just happened?
Gavin
I'll explain later. We just need to talk to your dad before you meet everyone else on the base.
Wesley realizes that Gavin is still keeping things from him, but he agrees to follow him anyway,
hoping to find out what's going on.
Wesley
Sure. Whatever. Come on.
Gavin
Alright.
Ascending the staircase, Wesley's hand reaches for the doorknob of Ajax's office. Just as he's about to turn it, Gavin's hand lands on his arm, stopping him.
Gavin
Wait! Let me go in first.
With a gesture of understanding, Wesley moves to position himself slightly behind Gavin as the door creaks open. Gavin takes the lead, entering the room.
Int. Ajax's Office - Night
As Gavin enters, he finds Ajax and Danny in the middle of a discussion. They're engaged in conversation, their voices serious and focused.
Danny's outfit exudes a relaxed and comfortable vibe. He wears a sleeveless green shirt that complements his well-toned arms. Paired with this is a set of green and white shorts, designed to provide him with unrestricted mobility. His choice of footwear consists of sneakers that tastefully combine shades of green, white, and black, showcasing his laid-back yet fashionable style.
Ajax's attire is practical and functional. He wears a black compression shirt that fits his muscular build well, along with black sweatpants that allow for easy movement. His choice of clothing suggests he's ready for action. He completes the look with sturdy black tactical boots, highlighting his leadership role within the team.
Danny
Yeah but I just think-
Danny falls silent as he spots Gavin entering the room, his attention shifting from Ajax to him with a look of surprise.
Ajax
Summers, where have you been?
Gavin
I've been gathering information, and I know why they're stealing all of this equipment. But, I had to use an outside resource.
Danny
Wait, how and why?
Ajax's brows knit together in suspicion.
Ajax
What kind of outside resource?
Wesley strides into the room, following in Gavin's wake, and Danny's reaction is immediate—a sharp intake of breath, his eyes widening in astonishment. Ajax's gaze shifts from Wesley to Gavin, his face a mask of inscrutable emotion, as he absorbs the unexpected presence of the two figures before him.
Gavin
Yeah, I told him everything.
Ajax
Gavin Nathaniel Summers. I gave you a direct order.
At the sound of his complete government name, Gavin involuntarily flinches, a flicker of discomfort crossing his features before he composes himself.
Gavin
I know. You can yell at me later, but we figured out what Iztan is planning. At least most of it.
Ajax's gaze shifts from Gavin to Wesley, his discerning eyes taking in the subtle signs of irritation on his son's face.
Ajax
Alright. Go ahead.
Wesley
Thank you. It's an old Iztan project that was scrapped. The project was called Project Ufufuo. Now, my Swahili isn't very good, but I'm pretty sure that means resurrection. Dad, I don't know how to say this.
Ajax's eyes widen as the realization of what his son is about to say dawns on him. He mentally braces himself for the potential worst.
Wesley
They're trying to bring Azazel back.
Ajax lets out a frustrated sigh and abruptly turns around. His steps are purposeful as he marches towards a nearby wall. With a surge of anger, he throws a punch at the wall, his clenched fist leaving a visible imprint before he slowly withdraws his hand.
Danny (Whispering)
Damn.
Ajax
How? That's not possible.
Gavin
I said the same thing.
Danny
I mean, is it?
Everyone looks at Danny.
Gavin
What do you mean?
Wesley notices Danny glancing toward Ajax and realizes what he's talking about.
Wesley
That was different.
Ajax
What was different?
Wesley
He's talking about us bringing you back.
Danny
Wait, how?
Ajax
I still had a body when they brought me back. This is different because Azazel was obliterated in the explosion. Besides, I shut down Project A.P.E.X. myself.
Wesley
Was that before or after S.T.A.T.I.C. was infiltrated?
Gavin
What are you getting at?
Wesley
Well, S.T.A.T.I.C. was infiltrated by Noxus, who is actually Iztan. So if Iztan got their hands on the gadgets, weapons, or projects you had locked away, they'd have almost everything they needed to bring him back.
Danny
If he comes back, every remaining Deviant on the planet is in danger.
Gavin
That also means Wes is in danger.
Wesley
That may be true. But he won't kill me first.
Danny
What? Why?
Wesley
Because he's a lunatic.
Danny
Ok, and you guys mentioned Project A.P.E.X. What is that?
Ajax
Project A.P.E.X. was an experimental serum designed by a member of the Elite Seven. It was specifically made in case we ever lost a member. I had it shut down after dealing with the numerous effects.
Danny
Ok. But you guys, the robbery happened more than a week ago. What’s to say he’s not already back?
Wesley
Well one we’d all be dead already and two…
Wesley takes off his backpack and sets it on the table, wincing in pain as he bends down to pull out his laptop. He thinks that no one notices, but Ajax's eagle eyes catch the subtle movement, and he realizes it immediately.
Wesley
They robbed Frasier Industries just yesterday but according to the report they walked out empty-handed. From what Gav told me about their robberies, they're still missing two components. There’s only one specific part that I’m concerned about.
Ajax
Let’s hear it.
Wesley
Because this situation is different from yours, they would need one extra component.
Danny
Which is?
Wesley
A blood sample from the person and someone closely related to them. The issue is I can't figure out where they would even find DNA close enough to match his.
Ajax
Actually, I know exactly where they can find that blood sample.
Gavin
What? Where?
Ajax
His daughter.
Everyone stares in shock.
Wesley
His daughter?
Ajax walks over to the desk, picking up the files before turning back to face Wesley. He hands the files to him, his expression serious. Wesley's hand darts forward, snatching the file from Ajax's outstretched hand with a sense of urgency. His eyes lock onto the contents, his brows furrowing as he begins to read the documents. The room's tension seems to amplify as Wesley delves into the information, his focus narrowing on the details presented before him.
Ajax
Her name is Zoey Harris. She was adopted by Jacob and Lashana Harris and she attends…
Wesley (Whispering)
Baxter University.
Ajax
Yeah. You know it?
Wesley
I don't just know it. Remember my friend group from high-school?
Ajax
Those girls?
Wesley
Yeah. Ciara goes there. She invited me to an event this weekend, and I can bring a friend.
Ajax
Which one is she again? The one you were always on the phone with?
Wesley
No, that's Sam. Ciara was the one who always dropped me off after school. Remember?
Ajax
Oh, the short one. Got it.
Danny
Wait. Do you guys think they already know about her?
Wesley
Yeah, they do.
Ajax
How do you know that?
Everyone looks at Wesley and Gavin suspiciously.
Gavin
Remember that masked guy we had no information about?
Danny
The psycho that stabbed Jade? Didn't Keith take away both of his arms?
Gavin nervously scratches the back of his head, his actions betraying a subtle unease as he glances at Wesley.
Gavin
Yeah, well Wes found out his name is Shi, and he's an assassin. He and Talia also attacked us at Wes’ loft.
Ajax
What?
Gavin
He also has a healing factor now, so he has both of his arms again.
Ajax
Why didn't you say anything about this first?
Sensing his father's temper beginning to rise, Wesley steps into the conversation.
Wesley
We wanted to share everything else first, but now that I’m hearing Azazel has a daughter, that’s probably why they were trying to kill us in the first place.
Ajax
He thought you guys knew too much. Damn, I was hoping we were ahead this time. Alright. Danny and Gavin will go to this event tomorrow. You're going to find Zoey and extract her before any Iztan agents get to her.
Wesley
Wait. What about-
Ajax's voice cuts across Wesley's words, his interruption immediate and forceful.
Ajax
Danny I know you’re still recovering from the other mission, but I need you on this.
Danny
Of course. I’ll prepare the Javelin for flight.
Ajax
You guys fly out tomorrow morning. Meeting dismissed.
Danny exits Ajax's office, his movement so rapid that a gust of wind ripples through the space, rustling papers and causing loose objects to shift.
Ajax
Gavin, go to the lab and have Valeria take a look at you.
Gavin
Jack I’m fin-
Ajax interrupts.
Ajax
I’m not asking.
Gavin
Yes sir.
Gavin exits the office. Ajax contacts the lab, and Valeria's face appears on the screen behind his desk, akin to a FaceTime call.
Ajax
Anything new?
Valeria
No sir, but she should wake up soon.
Ajax
Got it. I've sent Gavin to you. Please take a look at him. I'll be sending my son down there soon as well.
Valeria
Will do, sir.
Ajax presses a button on his desk, ending the communication with Valeria.
Wesley
Dad, I’m fine.
Ajax
You know you’re not as discreet as you think. When you bent down to pick up your laptop, it was clear you were in pain.
Wesley
Is that why you blocked me from the mission? You brought me in to help, and now you’re casting me aside. Dad, this isn’t fair.
Ajax
I didn’t bring you in to do anything. That was your best friend who went against my direct orders.
The energy of the entire room shifts as Wesley's temper begins to rise.
Wesley
Don’t you dare put this on Gavin. He would’ve never felt the need to ask me for help if you knew what you were doing.
Ajax
He should’ve never asked you to come back in the first place.
Wesley
Oh, so that’s what this is about.
Ajax
What are you talking about?
Wesley (Shouting)
It's not so much about Gavin going against your orders. It's about me. We haven’t seen each other in over 2 years, and you weren’t even happy to see me when I walked in. Some father you are.
Ajax (Shouting)
I went into hiding to protect you! You were out of control last time. I thought you grew out of this, but I was wrong. You still have no regard for your own life.
Wesley
Well, someone has to do it.
Ajax (Shouting)
And that has to be you? Wesley, you're not some expendable soldier! Your mother and I didn't want this for you!
Wesley (Shouting)
Yeah, well she's not here to stop me. Is she?
Ajax's eyes widen in shock as he gazes at Wesley, his features contorted with surprise and a hint of regret. Meanwhile, tears begin to well up in Wesley's eyes, his emotions visibly raw and exposed. A heavy sigh escapes Ajax's lips, carrying a sense of deep sadness and weariness .
Wesley (Shouting)
First I lost her, and now I'm losing you. The painful part is, you're still alive. You know, when parents talk about protecting their kids, they actually mean being there for them. Your idea of protecting me is vanishing for over two years. Just because I'm in college doesn't mean I don't need you anymore. It's as if you've forgotten that you're all I have left.
Ajax
Son, come here.
Wesley
No, I’m fine.
Wesley swallows his tears, refusing to cry in front of his father, trying to hold back his emotions.
Ajax
Buddy come on…
Ajax walks over to Wesley, his usually stoic demeanor giving way to a deep sense of paternal concern. He pulls his son into a tight embrace, holding him as if he wants to shield him from all the pain and troubles of the world. Wesley, caught off guard by the embrace, initially resists, but the weight of his emotions becomes too much to bear, and he eventually lets go, allowing himself to break down in his father's arms.
Wesley
Dad I miss her so much.
Ajax
I know son. I do too.
Wesley
And I missed you more than you know.
Ajax
I’ve missed you too.
In the midst of their embrace, as tears and emotions flow freely, Wesley's trembling hand inadvertently brushes against Ajax's right arm. The unexpected contact causes Wesley's eyes to widen with surprise.
Wesley (Whispering)
Dad…
Ajax
Yeah?
Wesley
What happened to your arm?
Ajax takes a slight step backward, his expression a mixture of surprise and disbelief.
Ajax
How did you-
Wesley interrupts.
Wesley
New ability. Now tell me what happened.
Ajax
I lost it the same day we lost S.T.A.T.I.C.
Wesley
Who?
Ajax
Son.
Wesley locks his gaze onto his father's, a silent yet intense demand for an explanation.
Wesley
Who did it?
Ajax sighs.
Ajax
Aiden.
Wesley
So he really does work for Iztan now.
Ajax
Unfortunately, yes. Aiden was the one who murdered Samuel, Theodore, Torin, Ivan, and Charles. When the team found me, I was pinned down under debris. They saved me, but they couldn't save my arm, so we had to amputate it.
Wesley's eyes widen in disbelief as he gazes at his father, utterly baffled.
Wesley
Making you the last council member. You were awake for this?
Ajax
I was. But, on the bright side, William was able to build me a new one.
Wesley reaches out and gently lifts his father's sleeve, his fingers tracing the lines of Ajax's prosthetic arm as he examines it closely.
Wesley
I noticed but for a prosthetic it looks so…
Ajax
Real?
Wesley nods in response.
Wesley
Dad, you have to let me go on this mission.
Ajax lets out a weary sigh and withdraws his arm, his gaze shifting as he walks back toward his desk
Wesley
There's no way you don't see the massive disadvantage you're at right now, Dad. I know you, and you know I'm right. You went from having an entire agency behind you to having six agents. I read their files on the way here; two of them are powerless, and one of them is in a coma. You need me.
Ajax wearily lowers himself into his chair, his shoulders sagging with the weight of the situation. His expression reveals a mix of stress and exhaustion, evident in the lines etched on his face and the weariness in his eyes.
Ajax
I know. I just can't lose you too. So much has happened – your uncle, Teddy, your mom, the Deviants, S.T.A.T.I.C. falling, and now this. You and this team are all I have left.
Wesley
Dad, I get it. But if Iztan wins, you’ll lose us and more. I know you're supposed to protect me and keep me safe, but you also have to realize I'm not a kid anymore. I’m not the same person I was three years ago. I can handle myself in a fight, and I’ll have backup there.
Ajax lets out a heavy sigh, his inner conflict showing in his expression as he wrestles with uncertainty.
Ajax
Alright. But what about school?
Wesley
I'm actually on summer break. I was considering taking a few summer classes, but I've already decided to put them on hold. So, I'm joining your team.
Ajax
Are you sure?
Wesley
Yeah I'm sure.
Ajax
In that case, welcome to S.T.A.T.I.C.
The office door swings open, and Wesley's attention shifts to the entrance.
Ajax
Keith, hey!
Wesley picks up on the subtle hint of nervousness in his father's voice.
Wesley (Thinking)
Is Dad nervous right now? No, that's not it. There's something else...
Keith
Hey.
Keith walks up to Ajax's desk, and Wesley turns around to greet him with a smile.
Wesley
Hi! My name is Wesley.
Wesley extends his hand for a handshake, but Keith's gaze remains fixed on it, his expression inscrutable.
Wesley (Thinking)
Someone doesn't like me.
Ajax steps in, breaking the moment before it becomes awkward.
Ajax
Wes, why don’t you head down to the lab and have Valeria check you out?
Feeling the shift in the situation, Wesley awkwardly withdraws his hand and turns back around.
Wesley
Sure. We’ll talk later.
Wesley turns away from the scene and makes his way out of the office.
Ajax
What the hell was that?
Keith
No offense, Director, but you know exactly why I’m not a fan of your son.
Ajax
That's not fair, and you know it.
Keith
Whatever. What is this mission I'm hearing about?
Ajax
It doesn't matter because you're not going on it.
Keith
What? Why?
Ajax
You and I both know you want revenge for what happened to Jade, and nobody blames you, but this mission is extremely important.
Keith
Oh, so your son suddenly decides he wants to be a hero again, and he's instantly mission ready. But because my girlfriend got hurt, I suddenly become a liability? That makes total sense.
Ajax
I strongly suggest you watch how you talk about my son, especially in front of me.
Keith is taken aback by Ajax’s sudden aggression. He immediately takes a step back, his demeanor shifting as he clears his throat nervously.
Keith
You know what? Fine. Sideline me.
Keith walks out of the office, the tension in the room dissipating slightly. Ajax lets out a heavy sigh, his shoulders slumping with the weight of the situation.
Ajax
What am I going to do with that kid?
Int. Headquarters - Night
As Wesley exits the lounge, his brows furrow in confusion when he catches sight of Gavin walking towards his room. He quickens his pace a bit and calls out to him.
Wesley
Gav!
Gavin's steps slow down as he hears his name called, and he turns around in surprise to find his best friend, running up to him.
Gavin
I thought you were talking to your dad?
Wesley
Yeah, I was and then he sent me to get checked out in the infirmary.
Gavin
Oh yeah. It's this way.
Wesley quickens his pace to catch up with Gavin, falling into step beside him as they head towards the lab. The clacking of their footsteps echoes through the hallway as they engage in conversation.
Wesley
So Keith walked in, who, from what I gather, doesn't like me very much. Am I missing something here? You dragged me away earlier when you saw him walking toward us, and my dad basically kicked me out so I wouldn't talk to him.
Gavin
Actually yeah. Your dad was probably thinking the same thing I was.
Gavin reaches out and places his hand on Wesley's arm, stopping him in the hallway.
Gavin
Keith lost his entire family after Azazel's weapon was activated. His mom, dad, and two little sisters are all gone.
Wesley's heart sinks heavily, a visceral sensation like a plummeting stone in the pit of his stomach. Involuntarily, he closes his eyes, as if to shield himself from the weight of the news. A slow, deep sigh escapes his lips, carrying with it the weight of his emotions.
Wesley
And he blames me. Doesn't he?
Gavin
He blamed you and your friends at first. But then, a while back, a few agents who are now Iztan were talking about the moment you hesitated.
Wesley's expression shifts to a slow understanding. With a slight nod, he acknowledges the grim truth that now ties Keith's distant demeanor to his tragic past.
Wesley
That moment ruined a lot of lives. He has every right to hate me.
Gavin
Don't do that.
Wesley
Do what?
Gavin
Blame yourself for having morals. I get where Keith is coming from, and I'm sure you do too. But killing someone isn't easy, and you were already going through a lot.
Gavin instinctively puts his arm around his friend's neck, pulling him closer in a comforting embrace. With a gentle voice, he changes the subject.
Gavin
Come on, let's get you checked out. Valeria's in the lab.
Int. Headquarters Lab - Night
Gavin and Wesley walk into the lab, and Valeria is typing on her computer. On the screen are multiple scans of Jade, her injury, her medical history, and her abilities.
Gavin
I'm back!
Valeria glances up from her work, surprised by Gavin's swift return.
Valeria
Already?
In her moment of surprise, she accidentally knocks her head against the overhead lamp positioned above her workstation. Gavin and Wesley both grimace in sympathy, clearly feeling her pain.
Gavin
Are you alright?
Gavin rushes over to her and checks her head for any signs of injury. Valeria's cheeks flush with embarrassment as she realizes his concern.
Valeria
Yeah I’m fine.
Gavin
Yeah, but this time you're checking him out.
Valeria jumps slightly and pulls back from Gavin, her expression showing guilt and embarrassment.
Valeria
What?
Gavin returns her gaze with a puzzled smile, while Wesley's lips curl into a small grin as he starts chuckling softly.
Gavin
Or we can come back later.
Valeria pauses, a look of realization dawning on her face as she comprehends what Gavin actually meant.
Valeria
Oh you meant-
Valeria glances at Wesley, who gives her a subtle nod while trying to hold back the rest of his laughter.
Valeria
Oh….ok so I'm just going to do a quick checkup to make sure nothing is broken, and then I'm going to take some of your blood to make sure everything's normal.
Wesley
Got it.
Wesley walks over and takes a seat, while Valeria gathers various materials.
Valeria
So Gavin told me you both had a run-in with that lunatic who almost killed Jade.
Valeria begins a thorough examination of Wesley, carefully checking for any signs of fractures or breaks, her focused expression showing her commitment to her task.
Wesley
Yeah, he's definitely one of the most dangerous fighters I've ever faced.
Valeria
He didn't cut you, did he?
Wesley
No?
Valeria
Good, because Will and I are still working on a way to counter that poison. We're extremely close.
Wesley
I think I’ll be fine, considering I’m not a Deviant.
Valeria
Oh, that’s right. I almost forgot about that.
Wesley
Who’s Will?
Gavin
Oh, Will is like her partner in crime. He's in his lab right now, I think.
Valeria
Actually, he's in Jade's room. She was burning up earlier, so we had to give her something.
Gavin
Jade? Burning up?
Valeria
Trust me, I know. That poison is messing up her physiology. But she's stable and should be fine now.
Valeria's hand lightly brushes over Wesley's stomach, and he winces slightly in response.
Valeria
What's wrong?
Wesley
I took a bad hit in the stomach.
Valeria
Lift your shirt.
Wesley lifts his shirt, revealing his abdomen, and Valeria's gaze falls upon a sizable bruise marring his stomach.
Gavin
Jeez.
Wesley
What?
As Wesley lifts his shirt, his eyes follow Valeria's gaze, and he notices the prominent bruise on his stomach.
Wesley
Suddenly, it hurts a lot more.
Valeria
It's not as bad as it looks. You just need to put ice on it.
Valeria walks over to the lab freezer, retrieving an ice pack to help alleviate Wesley's bruise. After handing it to him, she proceeds to perform a series of tests on him, meticulously checking his vital signs, reflexes, and range of motion. She then gently swabs his arm to collect a blood sample, her movements practiced and precise.
Valeria
I've taken your blood just to make sure everything is alright with you.
Wesley
Thank you, Valeria.
Valeria
You can thank me by being more careful.
Wesley
I will.
Wesley and Gavin exit the lab, the door sliding shut behind them.
Gavin
Wait, could we visit Jade really quick?
Wesley
Yeah, of course.
Wesley and Gavin enter Jade's room, the soft hum of medical equipment creating an ambient backdrop. They see a frustrated young man engrossed in his tablet.
The young man is dressed in a light blue button-down shirt paired with neatly tailored black dress pants and polished dress shoes.
Young Man (Whispering)
Damn it.
Gavin exchanges a glance with Wesley, who responds with a casual shrug of his shoulders.
Gavin
Hey Will.
William
Hey Gavin.
Gavin
Something wrong?
William
Nothing. I’m just working on something.
Gavin
There's someone I'd like you to meet.
William turns around.
William
Bloody hell. Wesley Johnson?
Wesley
Nice to meet you, William!
William
Will is fine. It's nice to meet you. I'm a huge fan. But, the situation must be worse than I thought if you're here. No offense.
Wesley
None taken. So, you're the one who designed my fathers arm?
William
Yeah.
Gavin looks at Wesley shocked.
Gavin
He told you?
Wesley
No I figured it out.
Gavin
Understood. So Will how is she?
William
Her cryokinetic healing process is displaying gradual improvement, indicating positive advancement. If this progression rate persists, she should wake up soon.
Suddenly, the temperature in the room begins to climb, as Keith enters.
William
Hey Keith!
Wesley (Thinking)
Oh great!
Keith
What the hell is he doing in here?
Gavin
Keith cool it.
As Keith enters, a surge of tension fills the air, and Gavin instinctively moves to position himself in front of Wesley. However, before Gavin can fully intervene, Keith forcefully shoves him aside.
Keith
Why the hell are you really here?
Wesley
Listen, I understand why you're upset with me. But you weren't-
Keith's voice slices through the room, cutting off Wesley mid-sentence as he shouts his frustration and anger at him.
Keith (Shouting)
I wasn't what? All these years have slipped away, and you never once made an effort to support us. In fact, if I recall correctly, when S.T.A.T.I.C. fell, you were nowhere in sight. So while you were sitting on your ass doing nothing all these years, I've been a part of this team and going on every mission. But now, as soon as you show up, everything changes, and suddenly, I'm the issue?
Keith's index finger jabs sharply into Wesley's chest, punctuating his words with an accusatory gesture.
Keith
Because of you, I've been sidelined until further notice.
Gavin tenses, ready to intervene, but Wesley quickly raises his hand, signaling Gavin to hold back.
Wesley
Ok, I’m going to say this once. Please get your finger off of me.
Keith pushes Wesley backward, catching him off guard.
Keith
Or what tough guy?
Wesley quickly shifts from composure to visible irritation. His head tilts ever so slightly, his right hand tightening around the ice pack while his left curls into a tense fist. As his fists clench, a subtle tremor ripples through the room, causing objects on nearby surfaces to shiver. Gavin's apprehension heightens, his gaze darting around the lab in response to the building tension.
Gavin
Oh crap.
He catches himself, and the trembling in the room subsides as quickly as it started.
Wesley
Not worth it.
As Wesley strides past him, making his way towards the door, a distinct shift occurs in Keith's eyes, transforming them from their usual hazel shade to a fiery, intense orange. Simultaneously, a small, flickering fireball takes shape in the palm of his hand.
Keith (Whispering)
I’ll show you who’s not worth it.
Just as Keith readies himself to hurl the fiery projectile at Wesley, a firm grip suddenly clamps down on his arm, halting his motion. Startled, he turns to face Gavin.
Gavin
Don’t even think about it.
Gavin forcefully throws Keith off balance, causing him to tumble to the ground. He heads after Wesley, leaving William standing in the room, clearly taken aback by the sudden turn of events.
Gavin
Hey, are you okay?
Wesley
I'm fine Gav.
Gavin
Really? Because you were about 10 seconds away from using your powers.
Wesley
Yeah, and he's lucky I didn't.
Gavin
Let's just focus on getting ready for tomorrow.
Wesley
Yeah, whatever, sure. Also, where am I sleeping?
Gavin
You could sleep in my room. Keith wanted to room with Jade when they got together, so he moved out of the room. So the bed in there's free.
Wesley
Oh, so we're having a sleepover. Just like when we were kids.
Gavin
Just like when we were kids.
